The DFO roundabout (Homebush Bay Drive & Australia Avenue) in Sydney Olympic Park, notorious for congestion and crashes, is getting a $200 million upgrade to replace it with a signalized intersection and added lanes, starting construction in 2027 for two years, with current plans replacing a Diverging Diamond idea with a more traditional traffic light design to ease peak hour chaos and improve safety.
Key Details of the Upgrade:
- Solution: Replace the roundabout with traffic lights, add lanes to approaches, and improve signage.
- Cost: $200 million (funded by state & federal governments).
- Timeline: Construction starts 2027, lasts ~2 years.
- Previous Idea: A Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) was considered but rejected due to public feedback.
Why it’s Needed:
- To handle rapid growth in the area.
- To reduce gridlock during events and peak hours.
- To improve safety, following interim measures in late 2024.
Current Status:
- Designs are finalized, and community feedback on environmental factors was sought.
- Work is progressing towards starting construction in 2027.
